Mileageplus Upgrade Award - United Awards

MileagePlus Upgrade Awards are subject to capacity restrictions and are in limited supply. Using United MileagePlus Upgrade Awards is not possible when traveling on award tickets, heavily discounted promotional tickets, tickets with Basic Economy or Economy (first bag fee/no changes permitted) fares, or, say, the tickets that were bought from the official airline's website and the flight schedule are not known after the purchase. Tickets for Money + Miles cannot be upgraded using MileagePlus Upgrade Awards.

Most other fare classes demand a co-pay, but if you have a ticket in the O, Y, or B class, you won't be charged one. The United Polaris business price will be applied initially to requests for both United Premium Plus and United Polaris business class. When you make a request or are added to a waitlist, miles and co-pay are taken out of your account. The waitlist is supposed to be closed 24 hours before the start of the flight. The co-pay may vary at any time and cannot be applied to subsequent trips.

Only in compliance with the conditions of the booked fare are open-jaw, stopover, and circle excursions allowed.

The original fare class purchased will determine how many miles are accrued for MileagePlus and other related loyalty programs.

Changes to the Flight Are Allowed Based on the Terms of the Bought Fare

There is no monetary value per MileagePlus. 

The airlines will refund the miles and co-pay as well if the passenger uses a MileagePlus Upgrade Award thing for an upgrade. 

Typically, your MileagePlus Upgrade Award will be considered used if you choose to upgrade any aspect of your trip. 

Even if you are upgraded to United First or United Business on another segment, your MileagePlus Upgrade Award will not be used if your trip includes requested upgrades.

United airlines will fully redeposit the miles and co-pay in these cases. These reimbursements, if any, will take place seven to ten days following the trip.

Co-pays are subject to change at any time and cannot be applied to subsequent trips.

We will reimburse the difference in co-pay and miles after departure if you requested an upgrade to the United Polaris business class cabin but were only transferred to a United Premium Plus seat.

Travel in an upgraded seat may result in more taxes being collected by the government.

PQP is also accrued on the MileagePlus Upgrade Award's mileage component as of January 1, 2023, at a rate of one PQP for each 100 MileagePlus miles redeemed.

The monetary component of the co-pay fee is the basis for Premier Qualifying Points (PQP).

Only after a MileagePlus Upgrade Award has been flown will PQP be accumulated, and it could take up to a week for it to appear in your account. PQP obtained from the co-pay charge and PQP obtained from miles redeemed will be credited to your account independently and may appear at different times.
